They were astonished at how much character came through the barrels, even in their first vintage each wine seemed so alive, beaming with its own personality - and so the Gut Oggau family was born. Right from the start, their approach was to work alongside nature and treat the soil and the vines gently and sustainably. What was important to Stephanie and Eduard was that they didn't change the vineyard but instead discovered its natural potential. While the previous owners used to sell the grapes rather than to make wine in the late years, there was no reference in terms of quality or soil expression, which gave a completely blank canvas to work with. It was the old 17th-century winery and surrounding vineyards that found Stephanie and Eduard back in 2007, and luckily for us, the rest is history!įortunately, there had been a year-long gap between owners, so the soils had the chance to be washed clean of the chemicals previously used. “It was love at first sight I could have asked her to marry me immediately,” says Eduard “we knew that we wanted to do something together, but we didn’t have a master plan becoming wine growers was fate”. Mechtild and Bertholdi complete the tree as the grandparents, fruit sourced from the oldest single vineyards which produce complex, unique wines. These reflect the personalities of each wine, from the energetic, bold expressions of the children - Atanasius, Theodora, and Winifred, moving up to the powerful, rich and ageworthy wines related to the parents - Joschuari, Timotheus, and Josephine. This 'family' of wines is now synonymous with the iconic faces that are drawn and make up the labels. Their passionate approach to their vineyard continues into the winery where wines are treated are seen as alive, and adopt specific personalities. Working biodynamically from day 1, the vines have not seen any pesticides or herbicides. They adopted the gruelling task of restoring a 17th century winery with a 200 year old press that hadn't been cared for in over 20 years. Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe created Gut Oggau in 2007, based out of the tiny town of Oggau in Burgenland. Each year we are lucky enough to get our hands on an extremely limited amount of these incredible wines. Very rarely seen outside of Europe, the cult-like wines of Austrian producer Gut Oggau are some of the most highly sought after across the globe.
